Are independent contractors and freelancers becoming "employees" soon, yes; when the Federal and State government has their way.
It will never happen some say.
Well, could we have ever imagined having business shut down as it is today in April 2020? We can "push it under the rug" and not think about it, or we can think of all the laws enacted in the past which have already severely hurt small business to remind us just how relentless government overreach can be.
Because so many people are working from home and “freelancers”
in all industries is becoming common, the standard “subcontractors” industries
which have been around for “ages” may soon have to become “employees”.
Certainly with advances in technology this seems to be approaching in ways
which were not available for years. So for contractors in the past who thought
this could never happen and because it’s been talked about for so long without
happening, some are banking on this serious potential impact to their small business as going away. Well, we’ve thought about
many things like that in the past and they have become law.
Here is an article which is “general” but it offers clues
to the future for all industries, including subcontractors of all types.
Independent contractors and freelancers have
long been a sore point for federal and state officials who contend that many of
these workers are doing work that employees do. When employers classify workers
as independent contractors, they avoid taxes including the 6.2% of salary and
wages companies must pay for Social Security and the 1.45% they must pay for
Medicare. Employers must also pay for workers’ compensation and unemployment
and disability insurance.
